Sorry this is so late, everyone. It has been so busy for me even in my free time, trying to keep an up-to-date journal and also planning future adventures. Nonetheless, here is the beginning of my official blog for your viewing pleasure.
To get you up to speed, I will tell you how this excursion came about. I was recently laid off from Cessna Aircraft due to the economic hardship that the U.S. is experiencing. Before being laid off I had applied for a development program through work called the Textron Leadership Program (TLP). I was one of 18 candidates who got to fly down to Dallas Fort worth for an interview with the Vice Presidents of Textron. During this interview Process I met a girl by the name of Lindsey Hourihan. She had received a lay-off prior to the interview. She and I kept in touch after the interviews were over. We found out that we did not get accepted into the TLP so we began to chat about future plans. She told me about a little trip that she was planning to take with other lay-off victims from Cessna and invited me to come along. Being such short notice I didn’t know how to respond so I said I would think about it. After a couple hours of consideration I realized that there is nothing that is keeping me from doing this so I called Lindsey back that night I told her to count me in. We had a margarita meeting a couple nights later SO I could meet Brandon Albin and Ramsey Slim, the other two members on the trip. It didn’t take long to get acquainted and comfortable with this group. I knew that it was going to be fun.
The plan was to take a cruise over to Lisbon, Portugal from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and stay in Portugal for a while to do a couple of workaway jobs. Workaway is a website (www.workaway.info) designed to help people experience the freedom of travel while putting in a few hours work to accommodate your food and shelter needs. A person is obligate to work five hours a day, five days a week, in exchange for room and board. You are responsible for getting yourself to the location.
We found two people in Portugal willing to take the four of us and one couple in Ireland. The plan was to get to Lisbon, Travel to Madrid to catch a flight to see Sarah (sister) in Morocco and then fly back to Spain to catch a train to southern Portugal (the Algarve) to start working., the first job being in Poco Barreto and the second in Bensafrim. We would then take a month off to travel Europe while our eurail passes lasted and then start the third workaway in Ireland. The rest… who the hell knows?
